The Chinese government has facilitated the mass transfer of Uyghur and other ethnic minority citizens from the far west region of Xinjiang to factories across the country. Under conditions that strongly suggest forced labour, Uyghurs are working in factories that are in the supply chains of at least 83 well-known global brands in the technology, clothing and automotive sectors, including brands owned by this company. The Australian Strategic Policy Institute's 2020 report estimates (somewhat conservatively) that more than 80,000 Uyghurs were transferred out of Xinjiang to work in factories across China between 2017 and 2019, and some of them were sent directly from detention camps.

In October 2017 this company agreed to pay US$120 million to settle multi-state allegations that it concealed safety issues related to defective ignition switches in GM vehicles over several models and model years. The settlement, reached among the attorneys general of 49 states and the District of Columbia and this company, concludes a multi-state investigation over the company's failure to disclose in a timely manner the known safety defects.

In October 2017 this company agreed to pay US$13.9 million to settle a lawsuit brought by the Orange County District Attorney's Office alleging that it concealed serious safety defects in its motor vehicles to avoid costly recalls and part replacements. The defects were in the power steering, air bags and brake systems. As a result of the failure to disclose these defects at least 124 people died and 275 were injured.
