In 2016 Herbalife International Inc agreed to pay $200m in consumer relief and overhaul its business practices in a settlement with Federal Trade Commission (FTC). The agreement allows the company to avoid being charged with operating a pyramid schemed facing a forced shutdown. A legal complaint filed by the FTC in the California Federal Court said this company did not focus on retail sales but rather on bringing in new sales people who were deceived into thinking they could make big profits by selling its merchandise. This company agreed separately to pay $3m in an agreement that ends a separate investigation by the Illinois Attorney General's office.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Herbalife misled distributors about the value of attending its events. Distributors wouldn't have paid for these events if they knew the value, the Herbalife class action lawsuit contends.
