Rivalea, Australia's largest piggery operator, has announced on its website that it will phase out sow stalls by 2017. However Animal rights group, Animals Australia, is pushing to have this date brought forward, and is also calling on Rivalea to commit to the use of pain relief if performing surgical procedures on piglets, such a tail docking and teeth cutting.

With a $268,810 grant from the Australian Government's Clean Technology Food and Foundries Investment Program, Rivalea is improving the energy efficiency of its refrigeration plant at the Corowa abattoir (refrigeration is the most energy-intensive process at the facility). The company expects to reduce the carbon emissions intensity of the refrigeration system by 13 per cent, and save more than $200,000 in annual energy costs.

Compassion in World Farming is a UK-based organisation which works with the European food industry to encourage and reward commitment, transparency, performance and innovation in the field of animal welfare. This company won their Good Pig Award in 2011 in recognition for their decision to remove sow stalls and move to group housing and are on track to complete this by 2014 (ahead of voluntary Australian legislation for 2017). Also, Rivalea were involved from the beginning in the development of the Immuno castration vaccine, now marketed by Pfizer, and currently utilise the technology across all their farms. Rivalea has also recently installed 32 PigSAFE farrowing pens, which will form the basis of a project looking at replacing farrowing crates.
