Wikimedia is a global movement whose mission is to bring free educational content to the world. It does this through projects, chapters (including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wikisource, Wikiversity, Wikispecies) and the support structure of the charitable, non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. It operates some of the largest collaboratively edited reference projects in the world. In 2016, 70,000 volunteers added 5 million articles to Wikipedia with more than 1 billion devices visiting per month. About 80,000 people actively contribute each month. Revenue largely comes from donations and contributions. The Foundation was set up in 2003 as a way to fund projects.
