Ecosia searches are powered by Microsoft-owned Bing. This partnership means that an Ecosia search requires not just its own servers but Microsoft's as well. Part of the revenue generated by using Ecosia goes to Microsoft, who have several criticisms in the Shop Ethical database.

Ecosia publishes monthly financial reports and tree planting receipts. Ecosia also protects your privacy. It doesn't create personal profiles of you based on your search history, but actually anonymizes all searches within a spam protection period of 4 days. Moreover, Ecosia encrypts all searches to protect them from eavesdroppers, doesn't use any external tracking tools, and doesn't sell your data to advertisers.
