Starbucks opened its first store in Australia in 2000 in Sydney. It 2008 Starbucks closed 61 of its 85 stores. In 2014 the Australian operating licence of Starbucks was acquired by the Withers family, owners of 7-Eleven Australia.

Most of the underpayments were the result of Starbucks failing to pay part-time staff the correct overtime pay they were entitled to. Starbucks made payments of $4.57 million to 2,427 current and former employees, who were underpaid between 2014 and 2020. The company was also ordered to make a $150,000 contrition payment.
